Fall is upon us and it is my greatest pleasure to introduce to you our 100% handmade grapevine dream catches made by the lovely Irene Orkin ‘Manashkikiwe’ (she who gathers medicine) a lovely indigenous artist and herbalist who I had the pleasure of meeting at the farmers market this summer.
The first of many farmers and indigenous artists we will feature in our beautiful
???? 236 Avenue Rd gallery. Each dream catcher is 1 of 1 not another one like it exists in the entire world. There’s something incredibly romantic about buying something just for you, that makes you feel happy and inspired every time you look at it, made with love and intention.
Each dream catcher represents nearly 10 hours, shaping the grapevines while their wet. Drying them out, sourcing beads, crystals and hemp from local businesses up north. Once you start spinning the hemp the entire dream catcher web has to be done in one sitting. A romantic form of artistry passed down generation to generation.
A note from the artist:
DREAM CATCHERS
The indigenous people of turtle island believe that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher when hung over or near your bed swinging freely in the air, catches the dreams as they flow by.the good dreams are wise and light, they know how to pass trough the dream catcher, slipping through the outer holes and slide own the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know that she/he is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way get tangled in the dream catcher & perish in the light of a new day.
